Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful therapeutic method for healing trauma-based problems.
Informed by research in contemporary neuroscience, EMDR is part of a holistic approach to healing trauma by integrating body, mind, and spirit. In this professional training is in Laurel Parnell's model (an EMDR pioneer and author of five books, including Attachment-Focused EMDR: Healing Relational Trauma). During this training you will gain skills to work more effectively with complex cases using EMDR tools.
Through lecture, hands-on practice, and demonstrations, you will learn to:
Describe the EMDR model and components of treatment
Create a case formulation
Evaluate clients to gauge the appropriateness of EMDR treatment
Explain the Eight Phases of EMDR treatment
Demonstrate the protocols and procedures for using EMDR with a range of problems
Discuss protocols and procedures for using EMDR with a wide range of diagnostic categories
Review client selection criteria and cautions necessary for the safe use of EMDR
Describe techniques for working with blocked processing and abreactions (catharsis)
Differentiate use of imaginal and cognitive interweaves
Identify how to use EMDR with adults traumatized as children
Define methods for developing inner resources used for interweaves, ego strengthening, and client closure
Integrate EMDR into clinical practice with a range of clients and presenting problems.
Dr. Parnell's model emphasizes the importance of compassionate, safe, and therapeutic relationships with clients that involve adapting protocols and procedures according to their psychological, emotional, cultural, and developmental needs.
Upon completion of this program you will understand how to use standard and modified EMDR protocols and procedures in your practice.

Julie Probus-Schad, LCSW
Julie Probus-Schad is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 25 years of experience treating individuals, couples, and families. She has a private practice in Chesterfield, MO. Julie is a Parnell Institute, and EMDRIA Approved Consultant and Facilitator as well as a Parnell Institute Trainer for EMDR Basic Training Parts 1, 2 and 3. Julie has facilitated trainings with the internationally recognized EMDR Expert, Dr. Laurel Parnell throughout the United States, in Curacao, Singapore and Malaysia. She has also provided training to the Missouri National Guard regarding trauma and dissociation. Julie has delivered Keynotes at the Parnell Institute Innovations in EMDR Conference in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and is slated for 2020 as well as providing Master Classes at the Parnell Institute Conference. She is a contributing author for, Rewiring the Addicted Brain: An EMDR–Based Treatment Model For Overcoming Addictive Disorders (Parnell, 2018, pages 273-293). Julie offers EMDRIA and Parnell Approved consultation for Certification and Consultation of Consultation. In addition to her private practice, Julie is passionate about trauma-informed healing throughout the world. She has trained staff and worked with children in orphanages and children’s homes in South Africa, Peru, India, and Nepal. Julie has worked with the Trauma Healing and Reconciliation Program in Monrovia, Liberia, focusing on reintegrating former Child Soldiers into the community and subsequently provided Resource Tapping to children via Skype during the Ebola Crisis.
Julie has also been instrumental in developing the Trauma Assistance Program-International, TAP-IN, the nonprofit sister organization of the Parnell Institute, where she serves as the Director under the Board President, Dr. Laurel Parnell. Prerequisites Attendance is limited to mental-health professionals who have a master's degree or higher in the mental health field and are licensed or certified through a state or national board that authorizes independent practice.
Experience Level No previous EMDR experience required.
Eligibility
All Parnell Institute EMDR training participants must be licensed mental health practitioners in their states or provinces. Participants must be able to practice independently, meaning they have their state’s approval to practice legally without supervision. All participants must submit a current, valid license number in order to register for the training. Participants must meet these eligibility requirements at the time of registration and payment. Applicants will be requested to send a copy of their license or certificate; information on how to do this will be sent to you upon registration. Qualifying participants include:
Medical doctors with a medical specialty in Psychiatry and must be licensed to practice in their states or provinces.
Nursing or higher with a specialization in psychiatric nursing and must be licensed to practice independently* in their states or provinces.
Mental Health Clinicians must have a Master’s or Doctoral degree in the mental health field (Counseling, Marriage Family Therapy, Psychology, Psychotherapy, Social Work) or related mental health discipline and must be licensed to practice independently* in their states or provinces. (Meaning – the participant has a current license to practice mental health issued by the Office of the Professions of their State, County or similar governing body and can practice legally without supervision.)
The following practitioners are acceptable mental health practitioners. All participants must submit their license in order to register:
Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW)
Psychologists (Ph.D., Psy.D, Ed.D)
Psychiatrists MD – specialization in Psychiatry
Licensed Creative Arts Therapists (LCAT)
Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC)
Licensed Psychoanalyst – licensing requirements as per the Office of the Professions
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
The Parnell Institute for EMDR reserves the right to cancel the registration of any registrant who does not meet the eligibility requirements for EMDR training.
Please note that the Parnell Institute for EMDR is no longer accepting mental health interns or unlicensed mental health professionals into our trainings.

In accordance with the Parnell EMDR Institute standards, to complete basic EMDR training requirements, participants must complete this course, receive 10 hours of consultation from a Parnell Institute-approved consultant, and then take Laurel Parnell's Advanced Clinical Workshop & Refresher Course. The Advanced Clinical Workshop (Part 3) will be offered in the Winter of 2021.
